"Video-Nou aimed at conforming, as Brecht said, a “community of producers of media”. This was their objective. For this it is necessary to develop a set of media and political practices capable of providing the public sphere with autonomy. That is, certain mechanisms of social interaction must be created, mechanisms that induce people to practice modes of a more direct, less “mediated” communication.
Camilo, one of the protagonists of this video, and Ocaña, the other, enact a series of performances that reach the viewer with an uncommon proximity. A crossdressed Camilo in the act of shaving reproduces a sort of television ad. Ocaña sings in “play-back”, as it was called back then, a copla. Then, both show their buttocks and become different characters: French singer, out of control granny, Lili Marlen... the party slowly turns into an orgy.
We must take into account that this video was made the day that the demonstration, organised by the FGAC, in which gays and lesbians called for the abolition of the Social Danger law, took place. We might then be able to understand more clearly that which Dziga Vertov once said, at the beginning of that wonderful cinematic experience known by the name of Kino-Pravda: we must organise a collective production (of the image) that helps us represent events “from the inside”.
